Introduction to Ne4

The move Ne4 really does force the issue by black. In one respect it attempts to simplify the situation. It can give white the option of sacrificing a pawn, because the bishop on g5 can be supported by h4. These can lead to very exciting games such as Nimzowitsch,A - Spielmann,R. One of the implications of Ne4, is that if white does exchange on e4, and black recaptures with a pawn, that pawn is likely to be weak, and have to be supported by a move such as f5. In this case, the f4 square can be usefully used. The game Spielmann,R - Thomas,G is a good example of this. f5 does weaken the b3-g8 diagnonal which can also be usefully be used by white. In the game Nikolac,J - Goehring,K [D36] for example white gets very nice squares for his knights after using the diagonal to exchange queens.
