My System : 21st Century Edition by Aron Nimzowitsch
This is a classic. The influence of Nimzovich's writing is undisputed. The fundamental ideas which are described in Nimzovich's book provide a background of tools and ideas for the modern tournament player. Rook on the 7th for example, is a phrase often quoted by chess players World wide. The idea of "overprotection" of a strong point, and "blockade", and of the pawn "chain" all provide chess "technology" which will definitely have a positive impact on a chess player's strength. This is definitely not a book for opening parrots! It is book for people who wish to deepen their knowledge of the fundamentals of chess. (Reviewer: Tryfon)
Test Your Positional Play by Bellin and Ponzetto
An excellent book which confronts the reader with a choice of three main plans for a number of positions which arose in tournament games. The reader is awarded points based on the choice of plan, and the variations which were foreseen. These points can be added up and the readers strength can be assessed! It is a uniquely challenging and addictive book as well as being highly instructional. (Reviewer: Tryfon)
The Art of the Middle Game by Paul Keres
Think Like a Grandmaster by Alexander Kotov
This is a classic. Alexander Kotov analyses the way Chess players analyse! This is a highly original book which attempts to look at the thought processes of grandmasters, and provided recommendations and tips for thinking faster and more effectively through the maze of variations one encounters during chess games. Tips include being systematic by enumerating candidate moves at the outset, and following each variation once and once only to avoid going backwards and forwards between variations.
