As an introductory chess set, this wooden board with carved wooden pieces offers a good price and attractive package. The painted board is approximately 12 by 12 inches and is heavy enough to resist the inevitable bumps and tumbles of early childhood. Game pieces are stable, well cut, and smooth to touch, but not especially ornate. Once children prove themselves to be chess enthusiasts, they will probably want to move up to a meatier and larger-scale set. But for the time being, this set is appealing and substantial enough to keep on permanent display in the living room, child's bedroom, or game room. Comes with instructions on how to play chess.
